Nyc flood zone map12/2/2023 ![]() ![]() The rise of the city’s red-hot real estate market in the latter part of the 1800s, meanwhile, helped to underwrite the idea of New York City as a limitless proposition. Indeed, before massive landfilling operations in the 1800s, Hoboken was an island community, and Jersey City little more than a spit of land connected to the mainland at low tide by a soggy marsh.Īs New York rose to become the nation’s largest city-a position it has retained for some 200 years-it continued to grow at the expense of its surrounding waters. The process of encroaching on the sea, which began at the tip of Manhattan, was then replicated in other places around New York Harbor, including Brooklyn and Queens and, across the Hudson River, in Jersey City and Hoboken. By 2010 such expansion had added 2,286 acres-the equivalent of more than 1,700 football fields of land-to the island. But grants to underwater land, made by the Crown and then the state of New York, expanded the city’s underwater real estate. Back in the 1600s, the lower part of the island ended at what is now Pearl Street, a couple of blocks inland from where it ends today. This move formed the basis for the physical expansion of the island of Manhattan. The Dutch colonists took some of the initial steps to wade out into the water-building a pier, for example-but it was the British who followed them who transformed underwater land into a commodity. New York has a long history of thumbing its nose at the sea. How did the largest city in the United States wind up in this perilous situation? What has been done to address the prospect of climate change and its impact on flooding in the city? And finally, what is the likelihood of tackling these issues during what is being fashioned as a new political era in New York, under a mayor who speaks of a “tale of two cities”? Does Bill de Blasio have any real intention of intelligently confronting the environmental future of New York, much less addressing the stakes involved in climate change for the city’s poor and dispossessed? This means that it is a good time to ask some important questions. And if the highest estimate for sea level rise does indeed hold up, some 800,000 New Yorkers will find themselves living with the real possibility of being swamped. But this is the best data currently at our disposal. It’s true that these are projections and that the maps of the floodplain based on them may not be completely accurate. A panel of climate experts convened by the city reported more grim news last year: its mid-range projection of sea level rise by the 2050s is eleven to twenty-four inches, though the figure could be as high as thirty-one inches. Given the reality of global climate change, there is likely to be even more high water in New York’s future. city, including New Orleans, are living with the prospect of high water encroaching on their lives. More people in New York than in any other U.S. And worse, the new FEMA maps reveal that almost 400,000 New Yorkers are living on the hundred-year floodplain. What it discovered was that the land area at risk of flood was 45 percent larger than what was reflected on the original maps. Then came Hurricane Sandy, and suddenly FEMA decided that it was time to revise the maps. The maps languished and were not updated even though FEMA was aware that it had understated the risk of flooding in the city. Back in 1983, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) mapped the flood risk of New York City and found that thirty-three square miles of the Big Apple fell within the hundred-year floodplain-that is, the area that has a 1 percent risk of a flood in any given year. Consider, for a moment, the risk of flooding in New York. It was easy to forget, that is, until Hurricane Sandy came roaring through in 2012 and the sea returned to its old haunt.įrom a natural hazards perspective, the nation’s largest city is up against some bad numbers. By one account, some 300 square miles of wetland-an area about a quarter of the size of Rhode Island-covered the ground within a twenty-five-mile radius of City Hall in Lower Manhattan. While wandering New York City’s asphalt streets and peering up at its towers of steel and glass, or while driving the parkways and roads that crisscross the metropolitan area, it is easy to forget that, as little as a hundred years ago, the city was situated smack in the middle of tidal wetlands. To minimize customer wait times, passport appointments are recommended, and are required for parties of 4 or more applicants. It is a a fun skate shoe, that promises a lot but honestly there are is a lot room of improvement there. The Monmouth County Clerk has two convenient passport offices to serve you. Style: The Fp sentinel skate shoe is for sure pretty stylish, and although it might remind a bit of the etnies marana skate shoes it still has a unique aesthetic look. There is a lot more room for improvement there. For example, cushioning of this shoes is far less compared to the etnies Joslin 2 skate shoes. But when i heard for 91% of absorption, i thought that this should have been probably the most comfortable skate shoe out there but i was wrong. Boardfeel/Grip: The Etnies Jolsin 2 shoe similar to the Joslin pro model, features the Michelin. There is an optional/removable velcro strap for extra snug fit in case you need it.I suggest you to buy this shoe in your normal shoe size. The shoe provides a nice, snug and secure fit. I haven’t felt that much of cushion to be honest although my legs were not hurting after a session. Sizing: The Etnies Joslin 2 skate shoe fits true to size. From my experience this has nothing to do with reality. The suede and the added thermothane toe piece helps to extend the lifetime of the shoe, but you will have your outsole having flatspots before reaching the level of ripping off the upper part.So definitely the durability of the sole and the flatspots is for sure an issue as it is not made by the most durable materials.Ĭushioning: The Fp Sentinel skate shoe features an outsole called DGS which is believed to absorb up to 91% of shock energy from the first to last day of use. The shoe is not bulky and at the same time it doesn’t have the look of a slim shoe as well but it definitely skates like it.The back part of the shoe is slightly higher than the front part but you cannot really feel it.ĭurability: Fp’s main idea is always to create supportive skate shoes in order to avoid skate injuries. Shape: The shape of the Fp sentinel skate shoe will remind you a bit the shape of the Etnies Marana Michelin skate shoes. I have had shoes with by far better grip so this might be a downside. In terms of grip, i found the sole not the most grippy one. It couldn’t be different as Fp footwear uses the DGS OUTSOLE SYSTEM which is a sole that has been hollowed out and filled with soft FluidX Protection material in the place of traditional rubbers and foams, so the shoe has superior board feel and flexibility. The shoes are super flexible since your first steps and when a shoe has such a feature since day one, it means lots of boardfeel. I suggest that you buy them in your normal shoe size.īoardfeel/Grip: Fp footwear has done a great job with the Fp sentinel shoe model when it comes to boardfeel. Sizing: The Fp sentinel skate shoe fits true to size. ![]()

Superliminal level 912/1/2023 ![]() ![]() Superliminal probably could have benefitted from a stronger narrative throughout the experience. The story of Superliminal is good but mostly feels like it’s hidden from the player. There’s a lot of interesting and unique style to the way Superliminal is built and that helps to make it into a unique experience.īut alas it is a level-based platformer, and thus there are still a pair of common issues to discuss. Simply put, Superliminal will change how you view games and the assumption you make because of your knowledge of the real world. About two thirds through the game, players are asked to walk through a wall with no overt clue that it would be possible, but by that point, Superliminal will have restructured the way players look at the game and the rules of the world of Superliminal that this becomes a reasonable assumption. There’s something particularly effective in the way Superliminal structures its levels to train the player to think in the way the designer was thinking. Superliminal does this multiple times and each time moving from a foreign concept needed to complete a puzzle which quickly becomes a brand new ability and then something players will be able to use as if it something they’ve used for years in multiple games. Standing closer to objects allows players to create larger objects, yet players can also pick up objects from the other side of the room (somehow) and shrink large objects in moments due to how far they are from their targets.Īnd while this is a major change to how players think about the physical properties of a three-dimensional object, this becomes second nature, which is good since this is something that Superliminal will require players to do often over the course of the game. That might sound confusing and for the first ten minutes, players might wrestle with the conceptual idea of what the controls and game are offering and requiring. So an apple size object might become the size of a car if held up to the end of a long hallway or a large block may become tiny if released while looking at a wall. However while players might pick up an object such as an apple, objects will grow to fill the maximum space of the player’s view that they can when dropped. The core mechanic of Superliminal is that players can pick up objects and drop them. As a concept on paper, it might seem thin, however, Superliminal also has a great design and interesting levels that elevate the simplistic design. It’s a common theme for puzzle games with the player being put in some nebulous danger by the story and then asked to pass through numerous levels to get free or safe. Superliminal starts with the player focused on exploring a dream-like space. It’s an interesting concept that has made the jump into an exceptional game over its five years in development. ![]() Bring any 3D object into the game and play around with mind-bending perspective tricks.Superliminal is a fresh game from Pillow Castle Games that focuses on perspective puzzles. Millenium flacon drone art12/1/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() documents his approach to calibrating the IMU going a bit further by using a Python script to generate offsets. The hardware involved is an MPU6050 6-axis sensor that is interfaced with a Teensy 3.2 board. His 3D Millennium Falcon model gets orientation data from his IMU as an an HID device. Those practices are fine for some, but has found a more elegant hack for a more civilized age. Here’s one that proves a hardware project can go beyond blinking LEDs and dumping massive chunks of data onto a serial console. While the scale miniature aficionados in the audience might turn their nose up at some of the artistic liberties taken on these low fidelity models, we think any normal person would be blown away if they saw them in person.Ĭontinue reading “ Millennium Falcon Docking Bay Doubles As Table” → Posted in LED Hacks, Toy Hacks Tagged diorama, millenium falcon, model, model making, RGB LED, star wars ![]() This isn’t the first time we’ve seen somebody augment a “toy” grade model with additional lighting effects. It’s almost a shame that the ship itself is so big, as a smaller model would have left more room to toss in a few Stormtroopers and droids out on patrol. The addition of small details like crates and barrels, plus the glossy black PVC sheet used for the floor, really brings the whole scene to life. The back-lit panels, with their inscrutable Imperial design aesthetic, look fantastic. While the Falcon is clearly the star of the show, the docking bay itself is certainly no afterthought. We’d say the engine is our favorite part, but those tiny lit panels in the cockpit are hard to beat. But with some reference material, fiber optic cables, and enough Arduinos to drive it all, the final lighting is truly a marvel. The Hasbro toy that started with certainly wasn’t what you’d call studio quality the little lighting it featured wasn’t even accurate to how the ship appears in the films. If you’ve ever considered lighting a model, this project is an excellent example to follow. With an incredible attention to detail, what started out a generic looking table and rather modest toy, have been combined into an interactive display that could woo even the staunchest of Trekkies. It’s not hard to imagine the line of thinking that convinced he should turn a simple glass table into a docking bay for a model of the Millennium Falcon, and looking at the final results, we think it was the right move. Of course, you could go all in and just make the thing a diorama… You might as well make the lights RGB and remote controlled, so you can fiddle with the look from across the room. It might not be a bad idea to put some lighting in there to make sure everything is easy to see. A glass table makes a perfect display case for showing off whatever’s important to you, but if you want keep the dust off of your treasures, closing up the sides is probably a wise move. ![]()

Flycut or end mill to remove material12/1/2023 ![]() ![]() The base sides were rectangular pieces initially so I marked out the position of the holes to be drilled on one side piece. The pivot shaft is 1/2" drill rod and the holes in the base are 5/8. The large holes are then fitted with plastic bearings: teflon, nylon, or delrin will do. ![]() The base is the first section constructed. Lautard suggests MT2 collets to hold tools within a toolholder made from large drill rod I expect to make multiple toolholders from drill rod instead because it is simpler and cheaper, mainly because I use only a few shank diameters.Ĭonstruction was not particularly difficult, possibly because I used a different (simpler) method to avoid the boring operations suggested in the plans to ensure alignment of the journals and bearings. I've only sharpened one end mill so far but this cutter, which was in poor shape, now seems to work fine. Not all grinding angles are fixed so there is a setting gauge for the side (flute) relief angles plus an adjustment to set the centermost point to grind. This intelligence about how an end mill should be sharpened is built in via the wide slots milled into the tool holder block (the upper block in the picture) this block is rotated to select the appropriate slot for the part of the end mill being sharpened. Likewise, the slight angle where the outside of end mill blades are lower than the inside is fixed. The plans indicate these are the default angles used in most end mills so this suits my needs and makes it simpler and less error prone (for us absent minded types) than a jig where each of the angles must be selected and set each time a cutter is sharpened. The difference is that the Mini-Tinker does not allow complete freedom in selecting the relief angles used in sharpening the teeth of end mills - standard angles of 7 and 15 degrees are built in. The Tinker is simpler than other cutter grinders (like the Stent and Quorn) and the Mini-Tinker is a further simplification of the underlying Tinker design. (Eventually I decided the Mini-Tinker wasn't for me and built a Brooks-Stent which has worked out well.) Initially, I made the normal Mini-Tinker tool holder which is limited to cutters with shanks of 3/8 inch or less but I have the material for a larger tool holder block to be built after trial of the regular size block. After studying the plans I decided to make a Mini-Tinker instead of the standard Tinker but scaled up the size of some parts to eventually allow sharpening cutters of 1/2 inch or more. The jig holds the tool to be sharpened and allows applying it to a bench grinder wheel in a precise way. Plans and information for a very similar jig, the Raymac, appeared in Model Engineers Workshop serialized 9/2001 to 2/2002 this unit may be somewhat more capable than the Tinker. The Mini-Tinker is a version of the Tinker Tool and Cutter Grinding Jig whose plans are sold by Guy Lautard. ![]()
